Barn Party Review

It's been a week since the barn party at my former news director's place.  I would have written sooner, but I have frequent connectivity problems with my DSL.  In fact, a couple weeks ago, I was on the phone with the support people for more than an hour.  After much testing of this and checking of that, the guy finally suggested that I change the line going from the phone jack to the DSL hook-up.  That seemed to work, but there are still a lot of times when it doesn't work right.  Don't know if it's just because there are a lot of other people logged on to the system, or maybe my phone lines are bad.  Grrrrr.

But, I digress.  The barn party.

The band was supposed to start playing at 8:00, so I got there around 6:30.  Quite a few folks were already there, and some of them were gathered around a car listening to the end of the Penn State-Michigan game.  The last series was exciting, even though PSU ended up losing.

After that, I chatted with people for a while, until 8:00.  That's when everyone moved into the barn and the ND came out, helped by his wife.  He started to speak, but was interrupted by "breaking news", a.k.a. the blooper tape.  It was really well done, and the ND was named the "man of the year."  He got all choked up.

Once the festivities were over, the band started playing and the ND moved to a chair so he could sit down while people came up to talk to him.  I spent some time with him just before I left and made sure to tell him how much I had learned from him.  I'm glad I did that.  He seems to be handling everything as well as can be expected, and he's already talking about next year's party.  But...

Nevermind

I went to West Hazleton yesterday to deliver some smoke alarms to the Red Cross (don't ask).  Gas in the area was $2.39/gallon, so I stopped to fill up, even though I didn't need much more than 1/4 of a tank.  Last I checked, gas in my area was about $2.55/gallon.  So, I was all excited, thinking I had found a bargain - until I got back home and noticed that gas here is also down to $2.39.

BTW, how sad is it when gas at $2.39/gallon is a good thing?

Strange Day

A very interesting day at work.  An incident with the morning crew is the talk of the town - and that's not good.  What happened is the morning meteorologist and the female anchor got into it a little bit - on the air - about the anchor taking a lot of sick days to take care of her young children.  The anchor got so upset that she walked off the set during a commercial break and the rookie reporter had to step in!  He did well, but...  Both the met and the anchor should have known better than to do what they did.  Don't know what the fallout, if any, will be.  The met has already posted an apology on Talkback.  Hmmm.

In other news, tomorrow I will head toward Harrisburg to see my former ND.  He's having his annual barn party even though he's just finished a 6-week course of chemotherapy to treat stage 4 brain cancer.  It's not good.  A lot of people are coming in from all over to see him.  I just hope I don't say something stupid like, "How are you doing?"

Puppy Tales

The evil Chrissy has come and gone.  For the past nine days, my parents' Scottie stayed with KT and me.  For the first week, everything went OK.  But then, on Sunday morning, I heard grrrr, grrr, grrr coming from the dining room.  Chrissy was going after KT.  I separated them and took KT up to the bedroom, where I realized she had a bloody nose! Chrissy was ignored the rest of the day, while KT recovered.  The evil Chrissy is now back where she belongs.

About 6-weeks on the diet, and I've lost 6 pounds.  And that's without going to the gym.  I think I'll have to quit NutriSystem after this month.  I need to start saving money for the wintger heating bills!  But, I will try to keep up with the healthier menu and smaller portions.

Next Monday I start working on elections.  Yuk.
