And the Winner is...

Him.  And me, I think.  On Thursday, the ND announced that the former EP is returning to his job after a six-year stint out of the business.  He starts on August 15th.  I expect I will continue to be dayside through his first week.  After that, I'm on vacation, and when I come back, I'll be back on the 11.

All in all, I think it's a good thing.  The nightshift suits my life much better than the day shift.  Although, the extra money would have been nice...

As for the Asst. ND, yesterday was his last day.  The station provided pizza for lunch and dinner, and there was a big cake in the newsroom.  The station also gave him a couple plane tickets that he can use to go to Vegas or something.  Marisa put together a very nice good-bye pkg featuring lots of old video. Then, after work, a bunch of people met him at Pocono Downs for a night at the races.  It was fun, even though I didn't bet on anything.  The recently departed EP was there, and it was good to see her again.  The returning EP was also there, and we had a chance to chat, so that was good.

On Friday morning, the ND announced that the assignment manager will take over as Asst. ND.  So, now the search begins for a new assignment manager.  The logical choice, I think, would be the guy who runs the night desk, but I'm not sure he wants the job.  The interesting times continue.

It's Either Him or Me

And right now, it's looking as though it's going to be him.  Talked with the ND briefly today, and he said he thinks the former EP will take the job.  A little surprising, perhaps, but maybe he misses the adrenaline rush of news.  Anyway, I could find out for sure as soon as Friday.

Friday is also the Asst. ND's last day.  It will be strange not to have him around the following Monday.  Interesting times.

Wanna Play?

Drove out to Neil's house in Williamsport last night to play games with him and some of his friends.  I took the back way, and it was a really nice drive - warm, windows rolled down, not much traffic.  I came back that way, too.  Again, not much traffic and, thankfully, not many deer.  Didn't win any games, but I had fun.  It's been a while since I played.

August is looking pretty busy as far as weekends go.  Marc's party is in a couple weeks and I said I'd go down for that.  Then, I'm thinking of going down that way again the following weekend to play games.  (Just remembered, the former EP mentioned later is having a big party that Saturday.  I think I'll be going to that!) The weekend after that is my birthday.  Neil's having games that Saturday, but I don't know what else might be going on.  Then, the last weekend of the month is the racquetball picnic.  Of course, there's also Musikfest.  Better start saving up gas money now!

Nothing new to report on the work front.  I'm still acting EP, and Dennis hasn't mentioned wanting to talk with me further or have me talk with the GM.  He did tell me that he's been talking with a previous EP about the job.  I know that guy's been on vacation, but I think he gets back this week.  So, maybe he'll come in for an interview.  Quite frankly, I can't imagine him wanting to come back.  He'd have longer hours than he does at PennDOT and he'd probably have to start with just two-weeks of vacation.  I can't see what's in it for him unless the money's so much better than what he's making at PennDOT.  Or, unless he really hates it there.  But, to my mind, he'd have to REALLY hate it to seriously consider coming back.

This is the last week for our Asst. ND.  He's retiring Friday after 28-years at the station.  I know a couple people in the newsroom have applied for that position, and this past Friday, the ND brought in an outside candidate (a former ND at the competition, no less!).  But, I think he really wants to fill both positions from inside.  I guess we'll find out eventually.

Down to Two

The past three weeks have been hectic.  Starting on July 6, I became "acting" Executive Producer.  I'm gradually settling in, but I had to do the 6 today, I'll do the 7 on Friday, and tomorrow, I have to go in extremely early to fill in on the desk.  Ahhh, the joys of management.

The ND tells me that he likes what I'm doing.  He also told me today that the job is down to me and a guy who used to work there.  He produced the 6 and was EP on top of that.  But, he's been working for PennDOT for the past few years.  He's got cushy hours and state benefits, so I don't know that he'd want to give that up.  On the other hand, maybe he misses news.

Anyway, he's on vacation until almost the end of the month, so I suppose I'll be acting EP until at least then.  If the ND gives this other guy the job, I'll likely go back to the 11.  And that would be OK, I think.
