Sock It to Me!

Two interesting things happened yesterday.  First, I got my socks back!  It only took about three-months, but Rachel finally returned the socks she borrowed during the flood.

Then, the real shock happened.  The ND put out a note saying that the Asst. ND had decided to retire!  He'll be gone at the end of next month.  WOW!  Losing an EP and an Asst. ND in the same month.

The Asst. ND has been at the station for 28 years.  A lot of what WNEP is, it is because of him.  I know that I learned a lot from him over the years.  He will definitely be missed.

What the ND will do now (and what it might mean for me), I don't know.  He's already talked to me about being "acting" EP, so I suppose that will still happen during the time between when the EP leaves and when the Asst. ND leaves.  After that?  Stay tuned.

A Hard Day's Night

Looks like it'll be a long night tonight.  Game 7 of the NBA finals between two teams that no one (at least not in this market) cares about.  Maybe because it's game 7 it'll generate some interest.  However, til they get done with the game and the post-game, I doubt many people will stick around to watch the news since we probably won't go on until about 12:30am.

This past Tuesday was another long day.  The head of the NYT Broadcast Group was in town to kick-off the mapping process.  It started with a 10am staff meeting.  When the memo about the meeting came out, it read like an invitation - a "stop by if you can" kind of thing.  Well, apparently, in NYT lingo, that means "Be there!"  I was actually planning to go anyway to pick up some brownie points, but the ND came around on Monday and told people on the night crew to show up.

So, I got there by 10 and just stayed.  And, of course, Tuesday night was game 6 of the NBA playoffs, so I didn't get out of there til almost 1:00 am.  I took advantage of the extra time to get some sort of start on this drug special.  Since it's scheduled to air in September, I want to focus on drugs in schools.  I think I can get 30 minutes out of that.

Jill stopped by the house on Tuesday evening to let out KT.  Jill said that, as she was leaving. my neighbor from across the street approached her and said, "You're not Jennifer!"  Good to know they're looking out for me, I guess.

Yesterday, the ND had all of us producers in his office.  He told us he plans to replace Steph as EP, but isn't sure when he'll be able to post the job.  He made it sound as though there would be some sort of rotating system of EPs.  But then, he asked me to stay and pretty much told me that he wants to make me "acting" EP in the interim.  So, I don't know what it all means except that I'll probably be going back to dayshift for a while.  He brought up the possibility of eventually having a dayside and a nightside EP, but the nightside EP would still have to do the 11.  I said I didn't think that would work for me.  I learned in Harrisburg that I can't be an indian AND a chief because I end up being mostly an indian when I need to be mostly a chief.  Doesn't work.

So, we'll see.  If I can be effective in the "acting" EP role, my chances of getting the permanent gig are probably pretty strong.  Dennis feels that bringing in an EP from the outside probably would not be the best choice - and I think he's right. It hasn't worked well in the past.  So, starting in July, I'll have to brush off my manager's hat.  The clothes go to the dry cleaner today!

Finished!

I've now finished my string of working 11 days out of the past 12.  I'm off today and Sunday.  May see a movie with Jill later on.  Then Sunday, I have to meet the parents and go for Father's Day dinner.

A fairly interesting week at work.  On Monday, the verdict in the Michael Jackson trial came down - not guilty on all counts!  I don't want to believe that he actually did anything to any kids.  But, a lot of the jurors apparently believe that at some point, he molested some child.  However, they weren't convinced that he ever molested this particular boy.  I don't think the kid's mother helped anything.  She seemed wackier than Jacko.  It will be interesting to see if they file a civil suit.

On Wednesday, the EP told the producers that she's leaving.  July 1st will be her last day.

Payback Time

I'm now paying for that three-day work week I had.  I'm in the middle of a stretch where I'll work 11 out of 12 days.  I've already done 5, and I'm off today.  Tomorrow, I start a stretch of six-straight.

On Monday, I joined a fitness club called Odyssey.  It's in Wilkes-Barre.  A little farther away than the Y, but it has its own parking lot, and everything's pretty much on one floor.  I've been there twice so far and may go tomorrow before I go to work.  they have a couple racqutball courts.  Haven't seen anyone playing yet.  Maybe I'll put up my notice again and see if I can scrounge up some games.

I thought I had more stuff to write about, but I can't really think what it was now.  I'm listening to the Phillies on the radio right now.  They've won 13 of their last 15 and are winning this one so far.  A guy from work and I are talking about going down to see a game sometime.  That would be good.  I don't think I've seen a Phillies game in person in 15-years!

Toxic Mold

Last week was a short one at work - just three-days - but it still felt like a long one.  The ND asked me to work on a special assignment report with one of our reporters.  The topic: Toxic Mold.  He'd apparently been working on it for several months, but I was brought in a couple weeks before deadline to approve the scripts.  I made a lot of changes to the first part, not so many to the second.  They aired last Wednesday.

In other news, I'm going to quit the Y and join Odyssey, I think.  I just don't like the Y, and there's no one there to play racquetball with.
